Research areas

Multilingualism, identities and epistemic access in schools characterised by high levels of diversity and flux.



I am a member of the Southern Multilingualisms and Diversities Consortium and am co-editing a book with Kenneth Hyltenstam titled Entangled Discourses: South-North Orders of Visibility in the Routledge Critical Studies in Multilingualism series. 

I am also a member of the COST New Speakers network (Management committee for Sweden).

Prior to this, I worked for 18 years as programme director in an adult basic education NGO in multilingual community-based and trade union sites. During this time, I was seconded to two national working groups tasked with developing education policies for the first democratic government in South Africa.

I have published in journals such as Applied Linguistics, Language and Education, Linguistics and Education, International Multilingual Research Journal, TESOL Quarterly.

I am on the Editorial Boards of Multilingual Margins and Reading and Writing: Journal of the Reading Association of South Africa.
